What is FDR?
FDR stands for Family Dispute Resolution and is a specific type of mediation.
The purpose of FDR is to provide parties with a safe process to try and resolve disputes arising from their separation or divorce. Disputes often mediated in FDR are parenting, child support and/or property settlement matters.
What is the role of the mediator?
The mediator who performs FDR mediations is called a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP). FDRPs have specific training in FDR mediations. They are also registered as accredited practitioners with the Australian Government Attorney- General’s Department.
The role of the mediator in FDR is to help parties resolve disputes that have arisen after their separation or divorce. This is done using a process involving discussion, identification of issues, option generation and negotiation. The role of the mediator is not to take sides, make decisions for parties, or offer parties legal advice but to help guide parties through the process of resolving their disputes.
